“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2 (KJV)

The first picture Scripture gives us of the earth is an unfinished one. It is without form and void. Darkness covers the deep. There is no garden, no dry ground, and no life walking upon it.

And right there, before any of that changes, the Spirit of God moves upon the waters.

I keep coming back to that detail. God did not wait for the earth to look beautiful before He drew near. He was present while it was still unformed.

I know Genesis 1 is telling us about creation. It is not saying that the earth was sinful or that its darkness was the same as the darkness we sometimes face in life. But it does show us something about God: an unfinished place does not frighten Him. He knows what to do there.

That matters when we look at our own lives. We often want to come to God with a finished version of ourselves. We want our faith to be stronger, our habits to be better, and our past to feel farther away. We tell ourselves we will pray more when we have our life in order. We will serve when we feel ready. We will answer His call when we feel qualified.

But if we wait until we are finished, we will never come.

God already sees what is unsettled in us. He sees the grief we have not worked through, the questions we are afraid to ask, and the places where we have tried to change and fallen short. None of it is hidden from Him. Yet He still calls us to come near.

That does not mean He leaves everything as it is. In Genesis, God speaks, and things begin to change. Light appears. What was unformed takes shape. Life grows where there was none. His presence is the beginning of the work, not the end of it.

I think we sometimes reverse that order. We assume we must change first so God will want to be near us. Scripture shows us a God who comes near and begins the work Himself.

I have been seeing that truth in a new way while building this website and teaching platform. Not long ago, there was nothing here but an idea. Then, little by little, something began to take shape. A name. A page. A place to write. A place to teach. Something that did not exist before began to become something I could actually see.

I am not comparing what I am doing to the creative work of God. But watching something move from an idea into something tangible has given me another way to think about how God works in us. And the more I have worked on this site, the more I have realized that even the desire behind it did not begin with a website.

It began with a move of God.

The Spirit moved in me and set something in motion—a desire to teach, to reach people, and to share His wonderful Gospel. What you are reading now is simply one of the things that has begun to take shape from that movement.

Grace does not require God to pretend that our broken places are whole. Grace means those broken places do not frighten Him away.

So if you feel unfinished today, you can tell Him the truth. You do not have to make your life sound better than it is when you pray. Bring Him the part you do not know how to fix. Ask Him to give you light for the next step, even if you cannot see the whole way forward.

The earth was still without form when the Spirit of God moved upon the waters.

Whatever God is still forming in you, you can meet Him there.
